i don't have polishing compound, but i have sandpaper, so i used that and the oven cleaner and tested it out and it didn't really do anything except scratch it up without removing any paint.

maybe 'cause it's not paint, it's anodizing?

or maybe i should've let the oven cleaner sit and work its magic for a little while...

The warmer the area you are stripping the ano the better it will work. You need to let it sit for 7-10 minutes, rinse with water while scrubbing with 000 steel wool. Repeat till all silver. If you leave the oven cleaner on for too long, it will discolor and tarnish the aluminum making it a bit harder to get to raw silver. Then hit with some polishing compound.
