Not surprising. He hasn't done their videos for a while, and they took his name off the website quite a while back.

Anybody know what's going on w/ Animal and Skavenger? Seems like both companies are at a stand-still.

I think both companies have painted themselves into a corner. Animal and Skavenger aim to serve a small and very specific group within BMX, and haven't done anything to change that since the rest of BMX parts companies have started to eat their lunch. Which is how Merrit started up I'm sure, out of how complacent animal had become in that space.

I'm sure none of that has anything to do why Bob left Animal, he just doesn't seem like one to stick around if he's not down with whatever direction, or lack there of, a sponsor might be taking. Admirable.

Doesn't mean I'm gonna go peeling off all my griffin stickers or anything...

I thought he left a long time ago? I remember reading that Albion interview about how they wanted to change his bars and he said no, he didn't want the tall ones to have his name on them.

I'm amazed that all these companies can stay above water anyway. Bikes are pretty bulletproof lately, there's been barely any style changes since the tall bars/slammed seat/no brakes/freecoaster thing came in about years ago, and most brakeless bikes you can assemble and pretty much forget about in terms of maintenance. You don't even really need to true the wheels. Who's buying new stuff all the time?

Skavenger hasn't done shit in a long time, and the ownership of Animal has been in flux for the last year; lest we not forget a portion of their staff leaving to start Merritt.

Basically this. Not enough money to make product isn't the best way to run a company...

As for the Make... they're no different.

Okay this is what I heard from a bike shop locally who sells Animal.

Ralph sold Animal a while back to a company who will more about their clothing line than bike parts. Animal will be a mall brand being sold at your local Zumiez. I knew that there wasn't a year that would go by where Ralph didn't see the company going out of business. In a discussion I had with a good friend of mine on who pretty much was in charge of the Animal team at the time I asked,"how can Animal not make that much money?" Everyone had their tires at the time, GHL's or TWW's, they dominated the peg market, and almost every kid on the East Coast had an Animal Griffin fitted and a DVD.

But I guess it wasn't enough, Bob saw where the company was going and being the real ass dude that he is stepped away before shit got corny. Bob treats BMX the way we all should, he loves it to death. He claims he would go insane without it. Scerbo doesn't need to hold Animal up on his shoulders anymore and he can ride more without his bookbag which he loves.

Like I said I don't know if its true that Animal was sold to a dude who is going to sell it in your local mall, but it seems like a good enough reason to step away from a company that represented true East Coast street.

As for the Bob Bars, I still don't get why they fucked with them. Since the 6 pairs of OG Bobs I let out over the years after the announcement that they were not going to be remade vanished from my friends houses. I got a pair of Big Four bars. Sure they aren't as perfect as OG Scerbos which I had been riding off and on from 2005. But they still look bad ass, and feel great, they are just a tad easier on my back.

Now I don't know how much of this shit is true, I was fixing a flat at my local shop on Friday and he was like DID YOU HEAR, ANIMAL IS GONNA BE A MALL BRAND! So don't shoot the messenger, I have friends on the team who I don't want to lose a paycheck.

Lil Wayne rocked that shit, as does a lot of the hip hop scene in NYC it seems. Its a smart business move... Like I said this was told to me by a store owner who distributes Animal. But from my own personal friendships I heard that each year Ralph thought Animal was going to go broke. Thats all I got, time to take a piss test [Frown]

I bought them in every color a few years in a row. But some I bought with like packaging defects so they'd be cheaper so they'd have dents and shit. But I just always loved those bars, until my back would start bugging me then Id go back to 2 piece then hate them and go back to Bob bars, Hence 6 bars,

Its just the principal that if I let you borrow something don't let someone else borrow them, then move and pretend like Im not gonna notice you sold them. I have a friend who wants a pair, I would like to ride a pair again after riding this ATown Trash kids bike at the park yesterday.
But yeah the big four's do feel better on my back its just I always looked up to Bob as a kid before we even met and became friends and those bars just remind me of so many good times. I would like at least one of my OG pairs back to ride. Im weird I know.

I offered him those Purple GT ones and a grey pair I had but he said he was good. This was in 2012 down ATX.

I also heard that the remake GT ones are going to be 8" rise or something different than the others. I'll wait until The Make $kapegoat bars come out. And Tom I got a job doing record reviews for $5.00 a review so expect some loot soon [Smile]

I just love em the same way people love Slams even though they are considered small compared to the legit ape bars of today, there is just something about the Bob bar being line up so perfectly with your pegs making grinds easier to control, they do make you hop higher, thats no myth. Ive been riding the best I have in a yea sinc my last pair went MIA. I have no beef with the big 4 bars in fact I love them I just also have been riding the best I've been in year since putting the big four on in December after a pair of prototype Cult Stone Cold bars.
So going to Bobs to Hoders, to Bobs to Big Cult bars now to Big Animal Four. I have zero complains. I know nostalgia sounds dumb but to me its not.

X-Traskin Cheaper Than Stitches.
Im surprised shin guards aren't more popular than helmets. Id tock Poor Boy shin pads. I loved my old UGP ones. Hammer 3Z sucked. I always saw what Jay Miron of Hoffman rode and bought those. I would then watch 1201 and only would wear one Play shin pad for some reason.
FASHION! Along with my Bomber/Block racing pads and Poor Boy number plate with a gyro. Yeah I was confused.

100% inaccurate. Seriously sounds like you just made half this shit up. Ralph still lives and breathes Animal. They are in a transitional period, but ownership has not changed hands.

Rumors people. Rumors.

Also, I like how you're trying to trade all the parts that have been given to you for free for a pair of handlebars. You get more free shit than some actual sponsored riders and then you try and pawn it off. Lame.

Lame.

i know you hate me still, and it was an obvious joke. I ride every part Im helped out with, just look at my bike. The rest goes to Hoeger. Over the years we have a stockpile of tires, bars, grips, and pegs that I honestly need to see some cash for my case coming up. Every part I ever felt like it was time to sell, has served its time an purpose. The only part that is barley rideable is a Match Female front wheel which is missing 8 spokes,
What I heard was a drunken conversation in 2012. Thats all, yeah it is rumors but when peoples rumors start to come true I have found its best to stop caring. I just want certain people who were there for me in my life when things were looking bleak to land on their feet the way they helped me. If you understood what happened over the past few years maybe you would understand. I put down one of the biggest monkeys you can have on your back, did my time, and came out on top,
Now I have one more open case, and a few more months of parole and I can live a normal life again.
I would never be dumb enough to trade Hoeger and my stash pile for one pair of bars, come on now. But for a bit yeah we were trying to get me a real lawyer again, even though it shit the bed last time. We had a bunch of parts we weren't riding so we gave them to the kids in Delco that would show up to spots with Kenda Kontact tires, and bent Slam Bars. I've done some fucked up shit to get heroin during my active addiction, it fucking sucks. Family members vanish and soon your only friend is a fucking needle.
Hoeger stuck it out with me, having never done anything more than smoke a cig, he got my ass clean and back filming every day and trying to make the people who support me fucking happy. Im giving each day 100% because each day on my bike, is a day without getting high, and that rules.
In the long run I realized, who the fuck cares? Until we see Joe shmoe Mallrat rocking a griffin t-shirt its all good. All I ask is well wishes on my case this May 27th and hopefully I can get my life back 100 percent normal. I have 10 months clean as of two weeks ago, which was no joke to get.

Whatever, I barely read that - the excuses don't matter to me.

Bottom line. If you have friends on Animal that you "don't want to see loose a paycheck" don't be on the internet talking nonsense about it. Especially when ANIMAL has hooked you up with FREE shit with ZERO benefit from them doing so, other than to HELP YOU out.

Also, I don't know what "local shop" you're referring to but my guess is Synergy. Aren't they mostly a scooter shop these days? Again, you have friends at Animal but you're listening to a guy who sells scooters?

JUST STOP.

I knew I should've not said anything to begin with, but then I thought about that drunken night and I was like shit maybe this is true. Which Im glad its not. Yes Animal doesn't need to help me out nor does anyone but I do my best to return the favor. Even if its a self filmed video of me on a borrowed iPhone, Im showing that it means the world to me to be able to ride their product and to represent in any way I can.

But what I'll never get is that growing up, you were like my big brother man. My mom trusted you with taking me out of state and sleeping in cars before I was 15. I was young and stupid, but I looked up to you and figured that everything you said or knew about life was true.

You got me into underground music thankfully and that in the long run got me playing in bands, touring, still going to shows ect. When I got a bit older and everyone in our crew kept progressing you and I had a dumb as shit falling out that we both never were 100 percent after. Im going to clear the air and say the truth, I was just a little kid man. I had no idea that it wasn't cool to talk with other peoples lady friends because I had never been around one who would talk to me besides Nikki who kicked me out of her wedding.

But I remember I was with Bob at T1 and you rolled up and I said hello to you and I got the cold shoulder. It was a bummer as we discussed it that here we are, two dudes from the same town on the other end of the country and we can't even have a civil talk between us. I never had thought about it that way.

All those years that you kept Tom and everyone close leaving me behind with Hoeger and my GL-2 I thank you for it. I still stayed close with my friends when I could, but everyone got really busy and people asked me, "How come I don't see you in Standpoint"? It wasn't cause I wasn't good enough I know that, I always had my own way of street riding and I know you were into it for a time. It was for personal reasons. You just didn't like me. I can respect that, it just sucks seeing you at a premiere and being super stoked on the job you have done, going up to you to shake your hand and having you go through the motions.

I know we were kids when we were best friends pretty much and I know thats over just sometimes I wish you would understand that I know you felt I didn't deserve the gig at Dig, you don't think I deserve companies to help me out, I get that.
But I've been doing this BMX thing along time, hell I remember when Nate Richards broke his arm down Harper's Woods. But we have grown up and grown apart.

We'll never go on a pool mission again, mosh together at a show, eat Carmen's Pizza and shoot the shit about the absurdities of Ridley. But thats life... I just want you to know Navaz, that I always will respect what you do in life because you earned every thing you've accomplished in BMX. How I ended up where I happen to be now is part of my father coming out in me, "Coach Schnell" that never give up mentality.

In 12th grade my goal after graduation was to write for a BMX Magazine. I accomplished that goal, after winning a few state short stories and poetry along with an internship at Decibel Extreme Music Magazine. It was a dream come true to me man!

Now when it comes to me getting hooked up, Id like to think its not 100 percent of who I know because I know I have a style that some people happen to be into. But whatever, I just wanted to say my piece. Im on my way to an NA meeting then Im hitting up the college to do some bike riding.
I just want you to know that you'll always be my brother at heart.
Sorry for all the BS. Also it was from Synergy because they said Animal stopped making steel pegs when I wanted a 4.5 Lino.

I'm not trying to have a personal conversation on a public forum Schnell. I'm simply defending the company that has done a lot for me - sent myself and my friends around the world, and helped keep my work alive in this industry. A company that has helped you out as well. Yet you want to gossip and spread rumors. If anyone else in this world posted what you did I would have been on here calling bullshit. Thats it.

Haha, we changed it from Delco Brand to Gutter Squad for that reason and we didn't TM it. I have nothing to argue about, I took the word of a dying shop owner, and a few drunk nights. I didn't mean for it to blow up, but I guess thats what the internet is good for, in the words of Ed Cardiff," Thats life!" I also I cut my Animal Big 4's down to the OG Bob 25" instead of searching out one of my old pairs, or spending my paycheck I get on Tuesday on handlebars. I gotta get a ticket for American Nightmare and Snapcase at This Is Hardcore this year in Philly!

My friend Hoeger is over 6ft tall and around 350 lbs he actually needs the BSD Raider Bars to ride. He kept saying my bike looked like a babies BMX, so I did this wall carve into this tiny bank to end this argument. With the good things in life, like BMX, friendship and fucking fun!

Ed and Tom Cardiff are two of my favorite people.
One drunken night he gave me a For Satan tattoo in Jason Sundays living room. Wild times. Cardona stole $200 worth of bbq and I woke up with a GG Allin looking tattoo on my leg.

Also I went out filming this morning and did some stuff I was stoked on and edited it to a SLOWDIVE tune.

Idk I had Joe Rich tell me once he just digs the way I cruise around, having looked up to Joe as a kid I always took that as the highest compliment I've ever been given BMX wise. Idk why he would say it but he did and it made me happy. I also don't really do "tricks" outside of tables out of walls and fast plant tricks.

So people I'll ride with talk about my riding style mostly being able to ride whatever and not make it look sloppy I guess, and I grew up having two coaches as parents so Im a total perfectionist. Years of having to always ride at my best I guess developed into a way of riding my bike that from what I was told looks very controlled and cool. I dunno, you be the judge. I've just never heard anyone be like eww you ride gross.

Well when I first learned table tops I would constantly try them like un-turndowns which took a while to break out of but I started bending the knees and turning the bars in late 2003 haha. I hate talking about my riding, that Joe Rich statement popped into my head and made me happy. But like I said, I just put this together yesterday. You decide if you like the way I ride, I don't really care.

I know but I'll film like one new clip Im pumped on and I'll just re-edit my old footage because I can't use all my new stuff because its for the full length this summer. Sorry if its annoying, but I do work hard on these because I hate editing my own footage.

i don't mean to "defend" schnell, but...

i don't think joe rich was blowing smoke when he paid schnell that compliment.

there's something magic about the way schnell grips his handlebars and pedals around, just completely absorbed, like the bike is filling a void in his soul...

i noticed it the first time i met him back in 1999, and i've never seen it in another rider since. he was 15 then, i think, and he was crazy like he is now, but it was less annoying because he was a kid and not a grown man. i haven't seen the guy in more than 10 years, so i don't really know if it's still true, but i would assume that it is.

Delaware County aka Delco is where we live, its a shithole 5 minutes from the city filled with every type of scumbag in the States. So we made these AA Summer Fit shirts to make Delco Brand classes and due to going to a print shop who raped us on pricing we ended up losing money by giving shirts away to pros who liked what we were doing, if we knew a kid was poor and couldnt afford the $20 for a shirt we'd sell em for ten.
Not this time, fuck AA I just want our shirts to be quality, printed on long lasting shirts, and get kids stoked for the video!

Short for Delaware county, the county adjacent to Philadelphia county.

You guys need to chill out.
If you don't like him, stay the fuck out of his threads.
Schnell, I can't imagine what you're going through, or what you've been through with your addictions. My brother got into Meth and some other shit, and he kicked it, and is doing great, but he's not the same person, as I'm sure you're not either.
Do what you love, don't hurt others and fuck everyone else.
Keep doing your thing. I like seeing your edits and enthusiasm, even though it's annoying at times.
The rest of you are bitter, old, crusty fucks.

That's not how BMXboard works. No chill allowed.

John, what you said right there^^^^ sums it up for me.

Schnell can post his psychobabble rants about Bob bars. He can re-edit his footage to some song I don't give a shit about. He can drop 30 names in one post.

Sorry you are an addict. I honestly hope you get your shit straight and end up better than ever. I, just like probably everyone on this board have a relationship with someone who has some sort of addiction, or might be dealing with it themselves.

Your riding is fun to watch. Posting 10 edits of the same fucking clips saying it's new is retarded.

Being old and crusty is beneficial to this conversation. I have to commit some serious thought to a potentially offensive post, unlike 9 years ago when I would have said what I can assure you would have been terrible things without giving a shit how awful it was.

In summation: this shit is fucking annoying and I'll respond to it however I god damned please and post in whatever dumbass schnell thread I want because fuck you that's why.

Do what you do schnell. And so will I. I'll buy you a god damn lemonade and a burrito and listen to you ramble if I ever meet you, but I'm also going to call you out here on your doofdick bullshit because that's what I'm here for. Cheers, ya mongoloid.

Those Skapegoat bars sold out really fast....there's definitely still a demand for sub 8" bars so long as they're Bobs...

We're about due for the tide turning on these foot high, 3 foot wide bars soon anyway, if for no other reason than that's they way things always go in BMX. It's weird to have been around long enough to have seen trends go out and come back again.

Coaster brakes in 2018...

I was experimenting with some generic 20" coaster brake wheels like 8 or ten years ago, but they where shit. I think that, if done correctly, it could actually be interesting alternative to brakes/brakeless/freecoaster. It basically enables you to take the best out of all those things – no levers/cables, free coasting fakies AND ability to fuckin slow down down a hill OR even backrail Fufanu (maybe. No, I'm sure).

Yeah, the stock slack would need to get adjusted, as it engages to quick for freestyle activity, but I'm quite sure it can be done right.

I can't remember which one it was, or if it was Moliterno or Krt Schmidt or somebody else, but one of the old Standard videos has a section with a guy who's doing like quad-barspin abubacas and suicide fufanus.

On the other side of the argument, though, MikeJ does that kind of shit brakeless by moving his heel.

The bars won't change. I don't think anyone is going back to having lower back pain again any time soon.
