Shad Johnson just posted on Instagram that DBZ passed away earlier this week.

I don't visit BMXBoard very often nowadays, but I came to the site to pay my respects. I was surprised there wasn't a thread at the top of the forum...

Here's a link to Shad's post, and a screen shot in case he deletes it for some reason.

This is terrible news. I got to meet him twice this year. Truly an honor to have got to spend time with him in person.

I bought him a bourbon on my birthday. He was dressed in all drag.

Threw this together in his memory.

Maybe we could print shirts to raise money for his funeral? This might all be dependent on the circumstances of things.

Great idea, Id buy a shirt. Maybe get someone to print some stickers, too. I can't not have a dbz raccoon on my bike, now.

Hard to figure out what to say. When we were both working in the industry, he was a great person to talk shop with. I'd love getting random messages & photos, and he gave me sage advice during a very dark period in my life last year. Like so many other people I've met through this site, he became more than just a board acquaintance. rest easy friend.

Fun fact, "Dorothy" in heels was the only time I've hung out with someone taller then me.

I'm really glad I got to spend my birthday with him. And thanks drew for not being a dick when we showed up at your house at 3 am.

Currently drinking a mickeys 40 and pouring some out. Because that's what he would've wanted.

Fuck you that's why.

He "mentored" quite a few of us, which is awesome to think about. I would be way more of a pussy without his guidance.

Sitting here kinda drunk and ruminating on the anniversary of a close friend that went out with, what I believe, was not an entirely accidental OD, 12 yrs ago.

Never got to meet the guy, but I've read most of what I think he put out online anyways. We probably would have gotten on well. RIP and condolences to his friends.

I had no idea he had impacted that many people in the industry (lots of others also). and I never thought he had an impact on me until I sat here for 20 minutes staring at a blank reply page trying to put the right words together. he'll be missed and my heart goes out to all his friends and family.

It was interesting and sometimes painful to see the obvious and not so obvious issues he was working through over the years I've been active on the board, but the man was also good for a great story and a solid, if sometimes hesitant, laugh. His posts during his brief stint at Primo and a specific post about falling down the stairs in heels cracked me the fuck up, and @Dorothy_Trainwreck put a smile on my face even if it didn't intend to.

It made me happy to see someone living a life so different from mine be so outwardly fulfilled, even though it inwardly did him in. I thought he was pretty fucking annoying in my early board years, but that all changed when I read through his old blog and paged through his spilled thoughts about his childhood, addiction, and struggling in America as an illegal citizen.

I never really knew truth from fiction, but even through his caricature he seemed like a man of character, and I hope he finds respite and resolution and some cheap AK ammo wherever he is now.

When that little box with the raccoon came up in the lower right corner of his blog just now, a few more tears came forth. To me, that was DBZ: a playful, warm and fuzzy creature...no matter what outward appearances he exuded.

I feel so fortunate for having experienced living with him for a couple months, because I still remember quite clearly our first meeting after I returned to Portland in'09. I was in a horrible state and reluctant to socialize, but he invited me to meet him at MFP, and I felt compelled to oblige. My mood changed dramatically when he hugged me tightly and expressed giggly excitement for my return. I couldn't believe someone was so enthusiastic about my presence, let alone DBZ of all people! As long as memory persists, I'll always wish I had done more to reciprocate that love. His passing reminds me what a piece of shit I am. [Smile] May thoughts of him be inspiration for us all!

.

i think the tshirt/sticker design should be "DBZ 1973-2014" underneath the pentagram raccoon. the font should be whatever font he used on the "approve" raccoon.

I really like the raccoon design as well. I feel like Tom should be the one to decide since he will be the one ultimately getting things printed.

I've never met him in person, but from our brief exchanges through email/twitter/instagram/bmxboard and from what I've heard through other people, he seemed like a genuinely kind and caring soul, the kind of person that brings more to the table than he takes, and a true individual. I hope he's at peace.

His tumblr blogs were always interesting to look through and I'm glad I picked up d/i/t/c/h/w/i/z/a/r/d when he printed it.

RIP DBZ

I have so many great memories with DBZ. If you came to Portland and Dom had a PBR and a roof over his head, so did you. He was truly a BMX lifer and anyone who ever met him should feel lucky. RIP DBZ, miss you homie.

I didn't know the guy apart from the board but after reading his posts for years I kinda feel like I knew him. I feel so bad for his family and friends, especially his wife. I had no idea he struggled so much with depression and addiction. The whole story is just so sad. I'll miss his witty responses and enthusiasm over his new bike builds and the early 90's BMX scene we both grew up in. And please everyone, please watch out for yourselves and others. I'm not sure what it is about BMX, but as I get closer to 40, there's a way disproportionate amount of BMXers compared with the general population that didn't make it into middle age, and that's quite unsettling and upsetting.

As a young and impressionable 15 yr old Im sure you can imagine the effect DBZs internet offerings had on me and my life...

Im happy to hear he touched so many people outside of our world. I cant believe I was so naive or even selfish to think that he was just our own.

RIP DBZ. Youll be missed. Ill pour one out for your memory when I find a fitting moment to do so [Frown]

would it be wrong of me to suggest a "DBZ's greatest hits/appreciation thread"? I've always enjoyed his rambling and attention to detail when it came to expressing his views. basically just a thread to post his quotes over the years.

why hasn't the main page image changed to the raccoon yet?

I'm in for a t shirt and stickers if they end up being made.

A Greatest Threads thing would be great, but better still would be for some of the writing he'd not published to see the light of day. I vaguely recall he wanted to write a book...

I haven't chimed in on this thread yet, but that is not due to apathy. This situation has been weighing very heavy on my mind. Death impacts me in such bigger ways than it used to about 4 years or more ago.
I really would love to see a collection of DBZ's thoughts/writings/rants/graphic arts. I want a full on play-by-play documentation of his brief time working at TIP Plus, I want to hear everything about what went on in his head.
Glad a donation page for the funeral got set up. Wish I could make it there for the ceremony.

This so much. The few things he would post/let slip were always hilarious. Especially because he was working there right at the end or in the aftermath of that Extreme sports-Guy Fieri dude who came in and starting spending a ton of money to get Primo relevant again.

I do recall him posting about the amount of NOS items on Tip's shelves, as well as shopping carts full of stripped Powerbites and broken Strand forks.

will someone with mspaint skills please step forward to create the tshirt/sticker/homepage graphic?

"dbz 1973-2014" under pentagram raccoon.

tom, what about adam roye? he and dbz were always nerding out over design shit? dbz would trust roye to know what to do.

not so much a mock up, but maybe "artistic direction"

lettering style, rough size, etc.

pentagram raccoon. note that the background is white. also note that the eyes are red.

the approve raccoon is on black background and does not look as good, in my opinion.

... just realized that those won't be high-res enough to work off of.

... i'll see what bigger version i can find in dbz's things. maybe tonight.

First and foremost, I'm going to miss you DBZ. I always dreamed of drinking a steelie with ya.

http://i60.tinypic.com/28ic6yt.jpg

Here's a very quick session in illustrator. I can add some detail or send the file off if anyone else wants to mess with it. I'm almost positive the "approve" "typeface" is Garramond. I included some different text styles for everyone to pick out.

Also: if anyone can find the graphic used for the pentagram, It would help to add some more detail.

Isn't the sigil of Baphomet just something fairly standard like this?

Maybe we could add a Fuck You That's Why or FYTW on top and the RIP DBZ stuff at the bottom?

Just a thought.

thanks, kyle. that looks great. can you mock one up with georgia? he was digging that font toward the end. i think georgia has a bold elegance that suits dbz and the occasion.

found this last night. it's a scan of the raccoon transparency he used for a silkscreening project.

it loses some of the detail of the original, but it met dbz's satisfaction, so it meets mine. and with white ink and red eyes, it's ready to go on a black background.

I think the font should be hand drawn, as on the FYTW shirt. DBZ would always address packages that way--white out with a sharpie border. I will make an attempt after work tonight.

shad has ordered stickers. don't know where he got the graphic or what it says, but i'm sure there's a raccoon on it.

... but let's continue with this process and come up with the official bmxboard-approved dbz memorial pentagram raccoon for the t-shirts.

...

re, the public bmx memorial in portland:
i get back from a business trip sunday the 18th. stickers and ashes should be here by then. plan is to pick a clear night and do a dbz-style street ride. meet up at goods first, end with whiskey at some bar.

any other board members thinking about showing up?

APPROVE. Love that damn coon graphic.

DBZ, APPROVE, FYTW laid out somehow with the coon would be nice, then the years added in as the fourth and final point.

The shirt should be awesome and confusing. All in one graphic and it seems Kyle, McPiff, youaint and lord Seth can drive it home.

p.s. I snagged that coon and threw it up on Instagram and there is one white pixel that would have tweaked him out. His detail and specs were tight.

Any word if Rich will release the destroyer shirt? That is a fucking work of art that I will also purchase

I agree w/ Dooley. The rip sentiment did not resonate w/ me as something dbz would have been down with, and it doesnt feel like us either. I think it worked initially in social media, to get the word out, but its time to do what we do. The world does need to know what the shirt means. Fuck you that's why...paired dbzs artwork says more than enough for a shirt we wear in the outsideworld.

too many good ideas.

i'm visualizing all of us having this convo while seated around a boardroom table. in the background is a huge whiteboard covered in raccoon sketches, pentagrams, sawfish, and dozens of asinine quotes.

i almost feel like "TAKE THE BOW AND ARROW" is a t-shirt on its own.

...as much as dbz might not approve of any of this, just remember: fuck him that's why. if he wanted input, he shouldn't have peaced out like a little bitch.

Is it weird that I want Sinister to create a DBZ's greatest hits forum or something to that effect?
I still remember how any time he'd respond to something I said in a thread I'd feel not quite starstruck, but something similar. Several times I would open threads specifically because I was hoping to see his input on a topic, or re-read one of his many very poignant observations.

same here. If I got a dbz reply, my post was a success.
he was pretty much my target audience as far as shitty dark humor or biting criticism goes, and a quote from this interview is exactly how I feel, and the kind of sentiment I really look for in people...

i get back from a business trip sunday the 18th. stickers and ashes should be here by then. plan is to pick a clear night and do a dbz-style street ride. meet up at goods first, end with whiskey at some bar.

any other board members thinking about showing up?

I'm going to talk to the missus and see if I can swing it. I'll probably just roll down with my shitty car and hope I make it. Would love to be tehre though, sounds like a fun time.

I'll make it down with my bike this spring though. Definitely want to meet some of your fuckers sooner rather than later. I missed a couple chances with DBZ.

Let's put some ashes in the down tube of a random DBI frame and sell it. Then one day, when it inevitably snaps, the ashes will be released into the air and spread like fungal spores around the tri-county area.

I believe this is what he truly wanted.

i understand if not everyone is thinking about this in the same way that i am, but here goes. it's important to me that the shirt is about his death as well as his life, because i will always feel both love and pain when i think about him.

the shirt is meaningful to me on a couple of levels:
-it honors dbz's legacy and gives us a chance to show our appreciation for him. DBZ FYTW 1973-2014 is dbz telling the world "fytw," because that's what he would want on his tombstone.
-also, it's a "fuck you you killed yourself" from me to him, 'cause i don't like that he did it, and he'd appreciate being called out on his bullshit.

so i don't feel like it's the raccoon's thought bubble. it's mine. unless we X out the eyes.

Hopefully it's the last LordSeth MS Paint design I have to get tattooed on me commemorating a board members death for a long time.

The thing about suicide (and death in general) is everyone forgets you, unless they're reminded. I remember, when I was working at a Honda dealership, this one mechanic killed himself. Nasty Nate. What a cool dude. He, seemingly, had it made. Huge house, hot wife, a kid, two cars, all these fucking motorcycles. Still, he was unhappy. Immediately after his funeral, everyone got drunk. I did too, but I do always do. These fuckos used it as an excuse to miss work. There was just something so superficial about their sobbing. "WHY?" "Why did he do it?" I didn't have the guts to tell them they'd never know. I never cried for Nate but once in a while I still think of him and I wonder if anyone else does. Sans his wife, I doubt it.

DBZ forever. Miss you, homie.

so good. molly visible at far left w/4loko.

zoobombing the freeway was the highlight. sent dom's ashes into the wind at 40 mph. it was wonderful.

molly said she'd tried responding to this thread a couple of times, but her phone does not like bmxboard, apparently.

yes on ashes for anyone who wants a piece of dom.

This idea appeals on more levels than I can explain right now...

It doesn't seem possible that over a month has passed--days and weeks have gone by in a blur, and I'm still not sure it's really hit me all the way yet... Some days I can't believe how easy it is for me to get up and walk around and eat and laugh like nothing happened. Other days I feel like the void he left behind will suck the life out of me--the word "future" is an abstruse joke, a curse. I've really been missing him today...

But I want to thank everyone who has shown their support and honored his memory.

To those who donated to the fundraiser, I'm so grateful we were able to have Dominic's ashes for the memorial, and I know that some of his friends appreciate it as well. Although it's been bewildering to imagine making my way through the rest of this life without the partner I shared my dreams with, I hope to apply myself to something that will bring meaning and joy to it. Your contributions have given me something I can begin to shape my future with.

I also want to thank everyone who has shared memories, pictures, affection, etc... I knew my husband was loved by many, but when I saw the wave of response to the news, I was speechless. More than anything, seeing how many people felt this loss and how quickly they rose up to express it to the world has given me profound comfort and strength. Please continue to share these things, and please know that I treasure every single story, description, photo, tattoo, memento--a piece of him shines through in each one and reminds me that I'm not the only one who lost him...

...and her. I appreciate those of you who have acknowledged the loss of Dorothy as well--she was an important part of Dominic's identity that he'd only recently reclaimed. Watching her emerge--all 7'2" of her strutting out into the night with brass knuckles clenched in her fist and an insatiable, outlandish lust--was a magnificent, thrilling process. I will forever be in awe of her, and it's a shame that more of the world didn't get to know her.

Special thanks to McPiffle for organizing and dealing with so much of the aftermath--I'm glad to have had such an incredible friend to help me through this.

I sat on that post for three days afraid it was too far. Glad it was appreciated. The idea of a Shortbus with a DBZ colony inside of it just seemed so damned perfect. Hearing his ashes were sprinkled on tires and released by bike was fucking beautiful.

Did it involve self-immolating monks? I can't remember...

All I can think about lately is the "Don't Lathe Me, Bro" meme I saw on his blog once. Most horrifyingly morbid humor ever. Nobody but him.

I love the coon tattoo. Only tattoo I considered getting for more than 30 seconds. I dunno though. I only knew him through our silly banter on here years ago, his blogs, and my recent return. I don't really think I deserve the coon. Kinda like I want the empire crown, but don't feel I deserve it. I should have been more wild when I was younger and road-tripped more places. I went to Austin once and saw The UM ride 9th street, so I've been to Mecca and have seen the Prophet, but empire was closed the day we were there so I didn't get to meet the King. Or ride the T-1 ramp... which I guess is like touching the big cube thing in the middle of Mecca... I still regret not meeting Tom and Tina and Bonny and now I'll always regret not meeting DBZ, Dominic or Dorothy(who was a rad fucking instagram follow btw).

Maybe, after my parents get so old they barely recognize me, I'll get *B*M*X* on my bicep.

I posted the don't lathe me bro picture in the dbz forum a few years back...

The post I was thinking of was one where he posted a video of a cat in a cage being doused with fuel and burnt... He posted it a few days after I had come across it, and it was one of the points where I realized me and him were a lot alike.

The shortbus you posted was mine. got it because of bmxboard. and his ashes will be getting taped in the headtube if I get some.

One of my favorite things about bmxboard is the crazy amount of synchronicity I run into here, and DBZ posts were one of the top sources of it.

on that note, I found my DBI shirt earlier last year. Last year was also the year of the camo cargo shorts. On at least 3 occasions I caught myself wearing the dbi shirt with camo shorts like a dork.

Then in the summer there was a bunch of advertisement for some sort of sports festival at the fair with dirtbikes, bmx shows, etc... I didn't pay any attention to it until a day or two before it happened, when one of the organizers was on the radio talking about how it was being put on by some christian group. Which made me wonder if vic murphy had anything to do with it, but I just assumed he didn't.

Well I don't go, and a few weeks pass and I eventually ask some younger guys about it, and they said some guy named vic was involved in setting it up, that he was doing really good tabletops at the local indoor park, and that the crew was all talking about "something called dirt bros."

I'm still kicking myself. This has nothing to do with DBZ, but the kind of thing I experience on here regularly, which he was a big part of...

just woke up from a crazy dream....

Stumbling through the Internet watching fucked up things on numerous video sites.

It was basically a documentary revolving around BMX and Dom's life based on everything that I know about him from BMXBOARD, his tumblrs, websites, his posts and then obviously what my fucked up brain had made up in between.

Started at an indoor contest showing Dom doing a one handed table on a quarter and waving at everybody as the announcer introduced him.

It traveled from the London Underground with grainy home video of 80's flatland and feeble grinds to Portland, Austin, and Southern California. I can't remember too much of the specifics now.

There was a part all about when Dom met Alex and all the kinky weird shit that was going on in and around their life. This was probably embellished by my boner machine of a brain but I enjoyed it none the less. Haha.

There was a fucked up part with mcpiffle.

Dom was telling a story about fucking dudes wives and brought up a girl who was unhappy with the size of her husband's dick. DBZ was borrowing someone's Escalade and basically just fucked dudes wife then told him about it to try and help the whole situation.

I've never seen mcpiffle in the flesh that I know of, but you came on screen and basically just said there was nothing wrong with the size of your dick and fuck DBZ for doing what he did.

You guys can figure out which recent posts created this part of the dream.

Mcpiffle then went on to narrate A section about another fallen Bmxer who had great promise. Dude was a college student, a genius college student who shredded on a bike. the face in my dream was someone that I've seen before but I can't place where. The name Im thinking was said was Mike Howard. I just googled that name and 'skateboard' because I thought I recognized the face as a skateboarder. That all lead me to realizing that Mike Carroll and Rick Howard, the founders of Girl skateboards, were most likely what my dream brain had concocted as this person.

I know Dom was a fan of certain skating, more the darker side, the baker and deathwish side, not the girl and chocolate scene of skateboarding but it all makes me wonder where my brain got all of this to begin with.

Then the video was in the Middle East with who I can only assume were Sadam, Dom, and the cameraman. Sadam handed Dom an rpg and tells him to just launch it up into the sky. Dom was like, "oh fuck yeah" and blasts it into the sky, exploding almost directly above. It was answered by a handful of other rockets exploding from all over the city.

After seeing it I called my friend TB from empire to see if he had heard of this movie. He said he had but hadn't seen it yet as they were wrapping the filming just as DBZ was leaving Austin this last year. I told him he had to watch it but I only had it on a vhs, blank in a .blueprint sleeve, I don't know how I went from having a digital downloaded copy to having a vhs but it's a dream and nothing really makes sense. Taylor said next time I'm in Austin we have to watch it and I was like, I'm in Austin man. So he came over with a pizza, or meat pocket, as Dom called them in the dream, to wherever I was and I pushed play, woke up in real life, and typed all this nonsense out.

I'm going back to sleep now.

shit, I wish my dreams were that vivid. Lately, since I haven't been drinking much and been pretty restless; the ones I remember most are where I gotta shoot someone and I either run out of ammo quick or the shots have no effect. I had the same style when I was younger, but it was punches in slow motion or didn't land. Been spending a lot more time at the range last couple months, so I blame it on that. Far as I can tell consciously I have no wish to actually shoot anyone, but I do like shooting. Tangentially, I'm probably gonna buy a wasr ak sometime soon. Maybe I'll get loaded and carve a small dbz in the stock or something. Any word on what's up with his gun(s)? I take it he was pretty fond of the AK.

anyone who wants ashes, send me an email using the address in the profile. i'll get around to it soon.

tom, i'm going to send you the raccoon shirt graphic file. can you have roye take a look at it? i actually don't have a graphics program that will let me manipulate the image at full resolution or add text. i'm hoping roye can sign off on it and make it ready for the screen printer.

i replaced the missing rear wheel with, of all things, an eastern 48-spoke, which i found in his apartment.

molly said she cared more about it going to someone who cared than getting any money for it, so if you're totally bonering for this thing, raise your hand.

otherwise, it's going to hang from the goods ceiling on permanent museum display — in which case, i think it'd be nice to fit it with a respectable wheel or at least a hawk tire.

thoughts?

sorry to anyone who's ready for this thread to die already. i know it's been three fucking months.

fyi, i emailed tom the t-shirt graphic tonight. thanks to kyle i for polishing it up.

i'm wine drunk and so happy to be feeling my pain like this.

here's a goddamn anecdote. it's not really an anecdote.

whenever things were going shitty for dom, which was always, i'd try to comfort him with the thought that, no matter what happens, we'd one day be old men smoking cigarettes on my front porch in rocking chairs.

i don't think dom ever believed it, but i confess that i took my own words to heart in the deepest way. having that fantasy ripped away from me is even more painful than the absence of his daily text messages or posts on the board.

here's some more.

i saw him exactly twice after he came back to portland from austin for the last time.

he was all fired up about singing in this goth band. they had this big show scheduled. his home life was a disaster, but this was the one concrete thing he had to hold onto, and he threw himself into it completely. or he tried to, anyway. we were texting, and i said, "can you sing?" and he said, "like an angel."

he cared so deeply about this show, but he didn't have a space to practice his singing, which was some kind of primal scream thing, and he didn't want to freak out his neighbors, who were already on edge with all the drugs and sketchy people coming and going every day.

a friend of his who manages a practice space downtown told him he could come by after hours. dom texted me and asked for a ride, and of course i said yes. i picked him up, and we drove downtown. it was the first time i'd seen him since he'd been back in town. we went to a bar, because it wasn't time yet.

he was ranting nonstop about all the bullshit going on, and after 20 minutes i grabbed his shoulders and said, "dom. chill." and he said, "i'm sorry, i'm just so stressed out, man. how are you doing?" and i'd talk for a sec, and then he'd chime in, "yeah, that's exactly what i'm talking about," and then he'd be off on another tirade, until i shook him out of it, and he'd apologize again.

that saturday, he invited me to come hang out at his apartment before he and molly went and crashed at a local hotel. their apartment was such a shitstorm that they just needed an escape. i came over, and we hung out on the balcony for a while, and it was the same thing — him just ranting.

eventually, it was time to go. i gave him and molly and some older woman who was a family friend a ride to the hotel. i dropped them at the front door while molly went inside to check in. i said my goodbye, gave him a hug, and went on my way.

30 minutes later, around midnight., he sent a text message informing me that, for a variety of reasons, the room was unavailable, and could i give them a ride back?

i was in bed, almost asleep, and i respectfully told him, "sorry, i can't help."

he sent a few more text messages letting me know that they'd be okay and were making do with public transit. he had his usual sense of humor about the whole mess, and things seemed manageable.

monday afternoon i texted him "ping," which was our code word for "want to hang out?"

he didn't respond. after a few days i got the feeling that something was not right. that friday, molly called and gave me the news.

not that i feel guilty or responsible or like there was anything i could've done, really, but... maybe my friend would still be here?

It should either hang from Goods ceiling or be passed around between board members at a regular interval. With the caveat that it be ridden for at least an entire day or something. I don't know I'm drunk.

don't beat yourself up over it for too long mcpiffle. He's tried it in the past and he would've tried it again in the future... It might be better for you (and so your family) to get past/learn from it now than it would have been if it happened later in life...

or not, what the fuck do I know?

-don't beat yourself up, tony. dom was an adult and like alaskan said, this wasn't his first time trying it.

-the bike should stay at goods. remember the traveling jean jacket?

Sent some money. I plan to scatter his ashes in Asheville, NC because I think he lived there at one point. If he didn't live there, then I will scatter them on some prostitutes in the 5th Ave area.

here's a goddamn anecdote. it's not really an anecdote.

whenever things were going shitty for dom, which was always, i'd try to comfort him with the thought that, no matter what happens, we'd one day be old men smoking cigarettes on my front porch in rocking chairs.

i don't think dom ever believed it, but i confess that i took my own words to heart in the deepest way. having that fantasy ripped away from me is even more painful than the absence of his daily text messages or posts on the board.

here's some more.

i saw him exactly twice after he came back to portland from austin for the last time.

he was all fired up about singing in this goth band. they had this big show scheduled. his home life was a disaster, but this was the one concrete thing he had to hold onto, and he threw himself into it completely. or he tried to, anyway. we were texting, and i said, "can you sing?" and he said, "like an angel."

he cared so deeply about this show, but he didn't have a space to practice his singing, which was some kind of primal scream thing, and he didn't want to freak out his neighbors, who were already on edge with all the drugs and sketchy people coming and going every day.

a friend of his who manages a practice space downtown told him he could come by after hours. dom texted me and asked for a ride, and of course i said yes. i picked him up, and we drove downtown. it was the first time i'd seen him since he'd been back in town. we went to a bar, because it wasn't time yet.

he was ranting nonstop about all the bullshit going on, and after 20 minutes i grabbed his shoulders and said, "dom. chill." and he said, "i'm sorry, i'm just so stressed out, man. how are you doing?" and i'd talk for a sec, and then he'd chime in, "yeah, that's exactly what i'm talking about," and then he'd be off on another tirade, until i shook him out of it, and he'd apologize again.

that saturday, he invited me to come hang out at his apartment before he and molly went and crashed at a local hotel. their apartment was such a shitstorm that they just needed an escape. i came over, and we hung out on the balcony for a while, and it was the same thing — him just ranting.

eventually, it was time to go. i gave him and molly and some older woman who was a family friend a ride to the hotel. i dropped them at the front door while molly went inside to check in. i said my goodbye, gave him a hug, and went on my way.

30 minutes later, around midnight., he sent a text message informing me that, for a variety of reasons, the room was unavailable, and could i give them a ride back?

i was in bed, almost asleep, and i respectfully told him, "sorry, i can't help."

he sent a few more text messages letting me know that they'd be okay and were making do with public transit. he had his usual sense of humor about the whole mess, and things seemed manageable.

monday afternoon i texted him "ping," which was our code word for "want to hang out?"

he didn't respond. after a few days i got the feeling that something was not right. that friday, molly called and gave me the news.

... i can't help but wonder if things would've been different if i'd gone and picked them up.

not that i feel guilty or responsible or like there was anything i could've done, really, but... maybe my friend would still be here?

I know it's not as easy as just deciding to think that way, but you can't second guess yourself over things you did, especially if it was something as small as going over to pick someone up. If you had gone to get him, more than likely you'd be asking yourself the same thing about some other thing that happened. What if I had called him that day? etc. Dom had a history of severe depression problems. People who have spent their entire careers trying to find solutions to psychiatric disorders haven't been able to find solutions that work for everyone in every instance. The brain is incredibly complex. It's normal for survivors to feel feel like you do though, and even more in the instance of suicide. I've been through this before with friends and I can relate to what you must be thinking right now.

Piff,

hope you're coping as well as possible.
Thanks for posting the blogs and information. definitely interested in the stickers and care package, already sent money for both.

Like everyone else is saying, it was Dom's choice, so don't beat yourself up too bad.

I had a good family friend take his life this past week and spent a bunch of time at work thinking pretty similar things. We can't beat ourselves up over something we had no control over.

Edit - forgot what I came in here for: I suspect that if DBZ reincarnated as his mascot animal, he would look like the one in this video.

Just opened mine up a few minutes ago. Thanks mcpiffle

I'm going to wrap some tissue paper around a bottle rocket, put some ashes between the rocket/paper, then lightly tape it off. Should be interesting. Some of you shooters should load a few rounds with ashes and shoot watermelons with him.

The rest are going into the shortbus headtube, unless I can think of something else more appropriate. Honestly, I think he'd want us to trick people into eating him...

i dunno what i think about the whole dom thing. on one hand i thnk about the kind of upbringing the dude probably had, how it all contributed to his psyche and attitude to life, and as someone who's had their own gender issues which they're trying to work through with psychoanlysis a big part of me wished things could've been different, that maybe he could've settled a bit, maybe written that book, etc, cos you know he had the talent.

but then there's that other part of me, that part that identifies with the crazy, that looks around at normal people and just despises that shit, and admires the fact that rather than sit around on his arse and read about people who live life or write about people who live, he just fucking did it. he may not have written the book but he sure as shit lived one, right?

i don't mean to be disrespectful to those who knew him well and still wished he were here, and nor do want to glorify or necessarily legitimise suicide (as unfashionable as it is to say so i actually think it pretty tragic). but in the end, i guess, you just have to respect people's choices, no matter how much you disagree with them or wish they were different.

That was nice. I liked the part about the universe keeping the legend intact. Heroes live forever, but legends never die.

"Most" of him (that I got anyway) is inside a skull on my kitchen table. This Halloween I'm putting him out on the front porch with a black candle burning and melting on the forehead.

in summation, one of DBZ's funniest jokes is recounted by a 50 year old woman who ran around with Dom when she was 23 and he was a 16 year old fucker

here it is below, it has multiple levels of humor and is so "DBZ" it's not even funny

BEKKI'S WORDS IN REFERENCE TO DOM: "Do you remember when they installed a "make your own stickers" machine in the Mall by Waitrose supermarket? You took it as a green card to stick stickers on all the meat in the supermarket. The one I remember that made me laugh - DANGER - FROZEN SPHINCTER - DO NOT EAT (on all the joints of meat in the frozen section!)

i just love the idea that a frozen sphincter is somehow dangerous

Update:

Ink Brigade in Portland is going to print the shirts. (Thanks, Jamie and Jen!) Individual shirts will be $12 shipped anywhere in the U.S. Add $10 for international.

PayPal your order to tonypiff@gmail.com. Be sure to include your shipping address and desired size. For pricing on more than a couple of shirts, email me directly, and I'll make sure you don't overpay.

We are going to print on Next Level 3600s. These are the same shirts that Goods prints on, and they fit great. If you want something different, let me know, and I will try to make it happen.

About 50 people expressed interest in shirts. I will place the order with Ink Brigade once I have received all of the funds. I am mailing the shirts out personally, so I thank you in advance for your patience.

I still need to get a shirt actually...

Busted out the denim jacket with The Riffs patch on it instead and poured some out.

I almost feel like we need to put some of Dom's best quotes on rotation on the front page.

Wore my shirt all day. Got good reviews at work. 10/10 would wear again. Glad I'm a part of this place. Glad I got to read his nonsense. Glad I got to talk on the phone with him once in CoffeCup's bedroom. Glad Tony sent me this shirt. Glad I always have alcohol nearby.

I drove to Asheville this morning, ate some Indian food, then drove down to the DIY spot with the idea that I would scatter his remains there.

When I arrived, there were a bunch of dudes there in full on construction mode, working on a new wedge and quarter set up. I introduced myself and explained my reason for being there and they were for lack of better term...stoked. They invited me to put his ashes in the mixer, then asked me to go ahead and slap him into the form. They all seemed genuinely into the idea of honoring him in this way and expressed that this would be a killer way to be handled. Seemed appropriate, I think.

So, rest in peace DBZ. I'll be back in a couple of weeks to take some runs on you.

That's a great place for his ashes. I put half of the ashes I got in John Waters' yard and the other half sits on my bookshelf. Part of me would like to keep the remaining ashes, but I feel the other half might need to make its way to wherever Lemmy ends up.

got my envelope from salty about 3 hours ago. thanks a lot man.

seeing it all safely folded in a page out of a shitty porn mag made me so happy. I sent a hub back to odyssey recently and had to force myself to take the porn out and just use bubblewrap, and I know I sent someone else some giant black udders at some point...

was it here a long time ago that someone's secret santa package was wrapped in a terrible porn collage?

anyways, I expected it to be pretty gruesome, but a quick peek in the envelope and the nipples looked alright, lower half not bad... But I didn't actually open it up/take the stickers out until about 20 minutes ago, and didn't notice the giant c-section stitching scars or the concerned/disgusted busdriver/lunchlady face until just now...

I've got some goodish stickers I'll send to the po address on the envelope... Is there anything you can think of that you'd want from here? The yukon quest dog race started downtown the other day, and I can send you some dog shit if you'd like...

Good to see he's being spread in the right places. Did you happen to leave a note for John Waters? I kind of feel like a note with a photo of Dorothy would probably make Dom and John Waters smile.

we had a memorial at a bar here in portland with his non-bmx friends. we got a round of shots and sprinkled his ashes in there. i had planned to dump like a tablespoon in mine, but some of the girls were squeamish, and i was trying to support the team vibe rather than make a scene.

No I didn’t, but I’ll probably do that in the future. I think he needs to know. Besides, I can’t imagine that he’d be the type of guy to be upset by something like this. After all, he does keep a jar of dirt that’s from John Wayne Gacy’s basement.

It's the day after the Harvest Moon (our anniversary). I still have a pile of his ashes, even though I had planned to release them last year, on a beach he had requested for this purpose years ago. I fucked it up...

I didn't have transportation, but someone I'd met recently volunteered to spend his birthday driving me to the coast. There I was, the Harvest Moon was full--and it turned out to be a goddamned eclipse!

It should have been the perfect send-off, but I just held onto this heavy-ass box of grey dust and howled as the moon slowly disappeared. When it began to reappear, we had to chase it down to keep it in view. At last I just watched, dumbstruck--I wasn't even on the beach anymore. I'd let the perfect opportunity--the only opportunity, it seemed, to set him free, slip away right before my eyes. The same way I'd watched as shadow overtook our lives, any hope that our light could be restored getting smaller and smaller, until it was too late.

Before I awoke yesterday, what would've been the morning of our sixth anniversary, I dreamt Dominic was angry with me. He was spitting with rage and disgust that I still dare to use his name--that my life since he's been gone has only served to painfully underscore everything he'd seen that had drained his will to live--and forbade me from mourning that day, saying it would make a mockery of the love it had once consecrated.

I didn't know what to do. I still don't know what to do.

Also: I found a few more of his BMX tshirts and a pair of Vans and some other effects of his. I'm not sure how to distribute them, but I know there are people who'd be stoked to have 'em.

I dunno, I hope this doesn't sound like I'm giving you advice or telling you what to think, because the truth is I struggle with this shit all the time. but in those times when my life does feel like my own, when it seems as though The Fall is not inevitable, this line hits home

The one time DBZ stayed at my place in NYC was when he was flying back from England (after his dad died) and it was a fuckload cheaper to fly back to NYC then to Portland rather than go direct. We got fucked up at Max Fish, then he crashed on my floor. When I got back from work the next day, he'd cleaned my filthy-ass bathtub.

Also got the chance to hang with him in Portland, ride a little street, and even borrow the Green Bastard for a while. Also spent some time at his place near Pier Park. I'm pretty sure I still have the contents of one of his jump drives on a hard drive somewhere—I need to check. Last time I saw him was in Portland when I randomly ran into him on the street.

I still miss him.
